Equilibrium state of ATP-driven ion pumps in relation to physiological ion concentration gradients

چکیده
Dear Sir: The purpose of this communication is to show that the Ca ion concentration gradient across the sarcoplasmic reticulum membrane of a resting skeletal muscle cell is close to what would be predicted for the equilibrium state of the ATP-driven Ca pump. The Na and K gradients across the plasma membranes of erythrocytes or of a resting squid axon, however, fall far short of the predicted equilibrium of the ATP-driven Na,K pump. The basis for the apparent inefficiency of the Na,K pump is not obvious. It may be physiological, arising from competing ion fluxes produced by other ion-translocating systems in the membrane, or it may be biochemical, arising from a factor such as imperfect discrimination by the pump protein between Na and K ions. The calculated equilibria are based on the assumption that ATP hydrolysis and ion transport are tightly coupled by the pump proteins, but no assumption about the detailed mechanism is required. With the generally accepted stoichiometries (Glynn and Karlish, 1975; Hasselbach, 1979), the coupled overall reactions are

Aggregation of an anionic azo dye with conventional cationic surfactants in premicellar region: A conductometric study
The interaction of Congo Red CR with a series of Alkyltrimethylamoniumbromide CnTAB, N-hexadecylpyridinium bromide CPB and N-hexadecylpyridinium CPC were investigated using conductometry technique. It was observed that the formation of dye-surfactant ion pairs takes place at surfactant concentration far below the critical micelle concentration of the individual surfactants. Aggregation was refl...
متن کاملATP Synthase: Two rotary molecular motors working together
ATP synthaseÑalso called FoF1 ATPase, or simply F-ATPaseÑis the universal protein that terminates oxidative phosphorylation by synthesizing ATP from ADP and phosphate. Nearly identical proteins are found in eukaryotic mitochondria and bacteria, and they all operate on the same principle. Electron driven ion pumps set up concentration and electrical gradients across a membrane. ATP synthase util...
متن کاملIon content and its correlation with some physiological parameters in olive cultivars in response to salinity
ABSTRACT- Olive (Olea europaea L.) is one of the most valuable and widespread fruit trees in Iran. Salt stress-induced changes in membrane stability, photosynthesis and antioxidant enzyme activity were examined on four olive cultivars (Dakal, Shiraz, Zard and Amigdalifolia) by emphasizing the correlation between measured parameters and ion (K+, Na+) accumulation. Plants were subjected to four s...
متن کاملDynamics of active membranes with internal noise
– We study the time-dependent height fluctuations of an active membrane containing energy-dissipating pumps that drive the membrane out of equilibrium. Unlike previous investigations based on models that neglect either curvature couplings or random fluctuations in pump activities, our formulation explores two new models that take both of these effects into account. In the first model, the magni...
متن کاملTwo-state flashing molecular pump
Here we study a pumping device capable of maintaining a density gradient and a flux of particles across a membrane. Its driving mechanism is based on the flashing ratchet effect powered by the random telegraph process in the presence of thermal fluctuations. Unlike Brownian motors, the concentrations at both reservoir boundaries need to be implemented as boundary conditions. The residence trans...
